SASSA Grant Payment Dates for September 2026
Payment Dates
Older persons get paid first, then disability, then every children’s grant two days later. Here’s the exact September schedule, the full calendar through March 2027, and what to do if the money still hasn’t landed.
Short answer
SASSA is staggering September payments across three working days, exactly as it has all year. There’s a fourth date too, but it only applies if you’ve been flagged for a review.
If you’ve ever stood in a queue on the 1st of the month only to be told your grant “isn’t in yet,” you already know SASSA doesn’t pay everyone on the same day. It never has. The agency splits payments across the first few working days of each month, in the same order every time, and September 2026 follows that pattern without any weekend or public holiday getting in the way.
The September 2026 schedule in full
| Who’s paid | Date | Day |
|---|---|---|
| Older Person’s Grant (including 75+) | 2 September 2026 | Wednesday |
| Disability Grant, War Veterans Grant | 3 September 2026 | Thursday |
| Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency, Grant-in-Aid | 4 September 2026 | Friday |
| Grant reviews and eLife Certification | 7 September 2026 | Monday |
| SRD R370 | ~23–30 September 2026 | Paid in batches |
Money doesn’t disappear if you don’t draw it on the day it lands. It sits safely in your account or on your card until you’re ready.
Getting a card that’s stuck on “insufficient funds” the morning of the 2nd? That’s usually a timing issue, not a missing payment — banks release SASSA batches at different times through the day, sometimes as late as that evening. Check again before assuming anything’s wrong.

Why there’s now a fourth payment day
SASSA added an extra date this year for people it needs to check on — either a routine grant review or an eLife Certification, which confirms you’re still alive and still eligible. If that applies to you, SASSA sends an SMS before your payment moves off the usual date. Missing that SMS is the most common reason people think their grant “just didn’t come.”
- September 2026: Monday 7 September
- October 2026: Wednesday 7 October
- November 2026: Friday 6 November
- December 2026: Monday 7 December
If you were flagged for review, don’t assume the payment has been cancelled. Wait for the fourth date, and if it still hasn’t arrived, visit your nearest SASSA office to finish the review — an unresolved review is what actually leads to a suspended grant. If you’re unsure what a review notice or status message actually means, our SASSA status meanings guide breaks down the common results.
Where SRD R370 fits into this
The R370 Social Relief of Distress grant runs on its own clock. It’s not part of the three-day schedule above, because SASSA has to finish that month’s income and identity checks before it can release anyone’s payment. In practice, that means:
- Batches typically go out from around the 23rd through the last working day of the month.
- Two people approved for the same month can still be paid a few days apart.
- Your specific date only shows up on the SRD portal once your month is marked approved.
- December batches often move earlier so recipients have funds before the holidays.
The R370 grant has been extended through 31 March 2027 at its current value, so if you’re already receiving it, there’s no need to reapply — just keep confirming your status each month. Not sure where your application currently stands? Our SRD status check guide walks through what each result actually means.
If your grant hasn’t arrived
Most “missing” payments turn out to be sitting in the account already — just check these in order before you panic or start queuing at a SASSA office.
- Give it a full day. Banks post SASSA batches at different times, and a payment due in the morning can still land that evening.
- Check your actual balance. An ATM balance enquiry or your banking app — not an old till slip — is the only reliable way to confirm what’s landed.
- Test the card itself. An expired card, a blocked card, or a gold card that’s been deactivated will stop you accessing money that’s genuinely there.
- Check your SRD status separately. If it’s the R370 grant, confirm the month shows as approved with a release date on the portal before assuming it’s late — see our SASSA status check guide if you’re not sure how.
- Rule out a review. If SASSA flagged you, your payment has likely moved to the fourth date of the month rather than gone missing.
- Call SASSA directly. If none of the above explains it, phone 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number ready, or visit an office in person.
Wait two working days before you report it. Both SASSA and the banks ask for this window before treating a payment as officially missing — reporting it the same morning usually just gets you told to check back later.
What happens around weekends and holidays
SASSA doesn’t pay on Saturdays, Sundays, or public holidays. When a scheduled date lands on one, the payment shifts to the nearest working day, which is why the exact dates move around from month to month even though the order — older persons, then disability, then children’s grants — never changes.
Heritage Day falls on 24 September 2026 and doesn’t affect this month’s payments directly, but it can slow down bank clearing if you’re already waiting on a delayed payment. The Day of Reconciliation on 16 December and Christmas Day on 25 December affect December’s schedule the same way.
Where you can actually collect your grant
Your own bank account
The simplest option — money is deposited directly, with no SASSA card fees beyond whatever your bank normally charges.
Postbank Black Card
The current card for anyone still relying on cash withdrawals. Works at ATMs and supermarket tills.
Supermarket tills
Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Boxer and Pick n Pay all pay out grants at the till, usually fee-free.
Cash Send
For SRD recipients without a bank account — a withdrawal code is sent by SMS instead of a card.
Still holding a SASSA gold card? Postbank’s official cut-off for switching to the Black Card was 31 August 2026. If yours hasn’t been swapped, do it as soon as possible — a deactivated gold card is now one of the most common reasons people can’t access a payment that’s already been made. If you’re updating your account at the same time, see our guide to changing your SASSA banking details safely.
Questions people keep asking
What date is the Older Person’s Grant paid in September 2026?
Wednesday, 2 September 2026. It’s always paid first each month, with disability following the next working day and children’s grants two days after that.
Will my Child Support Grant come on the same day as my Old Age Grant?
No — even if the same person receives both, they’re paid on separate days. The Older Person’s Grant lands first, and children’s grants follow roughly two working days later.
When exactly is the SRD R370 paid in September?
In batches, typically from around 23 September through the final working day of the month, once your monthly check has cleared. Your specific date only appears on the SRD portal after approval.
What happens if I don’t withdraw my grant on the scheduled date?
Nothing — the money stays exactly where it is, whether that’s your bank account or your card, and doesn’t expire. There’s no benefit to rushing; queues are usually shorter a few days after the payment date anyway.
Why does my payment date shift from month to month?
Because SASSA moves any date that falls on a weekend or public holiday to the nearest working day. The order of payments stays fixed — it’s only the calendar date that changes.
