Banking details
Change Banking Details
How to change the bank account your grant is paid into, what happens while the new account is checked, and how to recognise the scam that targets exactly this moment.
Grant Assist SA provides independent information. We cannot change your banking details, we never ask for them, and we are not SASSA.
Change your details on the official service
Banking details are changed on the official SASSA service and nowhere else. Open it by typing the address into your browser yourself, rather than following a link from a message, even if the message looks like it came from SASSA.
Opens the official government website in a new tab. Grant Assist SA has no banking form and no access to your account.
This is the page scammers copy
Changing banking details is the most impersonated part of this whole process, because it is the step that decides where the money goes. Fake websites, an SMS with a link, a WhatsApp message, a phone call from someone who already knows your name and your ID number. All of it exists, and all of it is aimed at the moment you are in right now.
SASSA does not phone, SMS or message you asking for your banking details, your PIN or a one-time password. If someone does, it is not SASSA, however much they seem to know about you. Reach the official service by typing the address in yourself.
How changing your banking details works
You submit the new account on the official service, and it is then checked against bank records before any money is paid into it. That check is why the change is not instant, and why a payment can sit still for a while after you make one.
The account normally has to be in your own name. A grant is paid to the person it belongs to, so an account belonging to a partner, a parent or a friend is usually rejected. This catches out more people than anything else on this subject, and it is worth sorting out before you submit rather than after.
None of it costs money, and nobody needs to do it for you.
What happens after you submit
A banking change moves through a few states before anything is paid into the new account.
The new details have been captured and are waiting to be checked. Nothing has been paid into them yet.
The account is being checked against bank records to confirm it exists and belongs to you.
The account passed the check and will be used for the next payment released to you.
The check did not pass. The usual causes are a name that does not match your ID, a closed or dormant account, or a mistyped number.
A payment cannot be released while banking details are unverified. The money is waiting, not lost.
A payment that is waiting on banking verification has not disappeared. It is held until there is a verified account to send it to.
How to change your banking details
- Open the official SASSA service by typing the address into your browser yourself.
- Find the banking details section for the grant you receive.
- Enter the ID number and mobile number linked to the application, if it asks for them.
- Enter the new account details exactly as they appear on your bank statement or in your banking app.
- Submit, then check back on the same service for the verification result.
What you need before you start
Never read your banking details out to someone who phoned you, and never enter them on a site you reached by tapping a link in a message.
- A bank account in your own name
- The bank name, account number and account type, taken from your statement rather than from memory
- The ID number and mobile number used on the application
- Access to that mobile number, in case a verification code is sent

SASSA GrantsBanking problems usually show up first as a payment that has not arrived.
What if verification is taking a long time?
A banking check sitting in progress is common. Usual reasons include:
We cannot tell you how long a verification takes, and nobody outside SASSA and your bank can. Anyone offering to push it through for a fee is taking money from you for nothing.
- The check against bank records has not completed yet
- The account is new and not fully active on the bank's side
- The details do not match exactly and are being reviewed
- The bank has flagged something on the account
- Administrative or system delays on the official service
If verification keeps failing
A failed check is almost always a mismatch rather than a refusal. Work through these before assuming something is wrong with the grant.
If the name on your bank account does not match your ID because of a marriage, a spelling or a name change, that is fixed at the bank, not on the grant service.
- Check the name on the account matches your ID document exactly, including initials and the order of your names.
- Confirm the account is open and active, and not dormant or closed.
- Check every digit of the account number against your statement, not against a number you wrote down.
- Confirm the account type you selected matches what the bank actually calls it.
- Submit the corrected details again on the official service.
- Speak to your bank if it keeps failing and everything looks right on your side.
Frequently asked questions
Can Grant Assist SA change my banking details?
No. We are an independent information website. We have no banking form, no access to your application, and we never ask for account details.
Someone phoned saying they are from SASSA and asked for my bank details. Is that real?
No. SASSA does not phone and ask for banking details, a PIN or a one-time password. End the call and go to the official service yourself.
I got an SMS with a link to update my banking details. Should I use it?
No. Type the official address into your browser instead. A link in a message is the most common way people are taken to a fake copy of the real site.
Can my grant be paid into someone else's account?
Normally no. The account usually has to be in the name of the person the grant belongs to.
Does changing banking details cost anything?
No. It is free on the official service, and nobody needs to do it for you.
Will my payment be delayed while the account is checked?
It can be. A payment is not released into an account that has not been verified, and it is held rather than lost.
How long does verification take?
We do not publish a number, because it varies and nobody outside SASSA and your bank can tell you. Treat a confident answer from anyone else as a warning sign.
My account name does not match my ID. What now?
That is corrected at your bank. The grant service checks against what the bank holds, so the bank is where the change has to happen first.
Where banking changes actually happen
Use the official service, not this website and not any third party, for:
- Submitting or changing the account a grant is paid into
- Checking whether an account has been verified
- A payment that is being held on banking verification
- Reporting a website or message pretending to be SASSA
These are the official government destinations. Check the address in your browser before entering anything.
How we handle this subject
No form, ever
This page has no banking form and never will. We cannot receive account details, which means they cannot be taken from us.
Type, do not tap
We tell you to reach the official service by typing the address yourself, because a link in a message is how most people end up on a fake copy.
No timeframes
We do not state how long verification takes. A confident number from anyone who is not SASSA or your bank is a warning sign.
