Appeals
SASSA Appeal Guide
How to challenge a declined grant decision, which of the two appeal routes applies to you, and what happens after you lodge one.
Grant Assist SA provides independent information. We cannot lodge, influence or check an appeal, and we are not SASSA or the tribunal that decides appeals.
Lodge an SRD appeal
If your SRD application was declined, the appeal is lodged on the official SRD service. If you were declined for any other grant, the route is different and is explained further down this page.
Opens the official government website in a new tab. Appeals are free, and Grant Assist SA cannot lodge one for you.
An appeal costs nothing
Appealing is free on the official service, and no agent, consultant or WhatsApp contact can improve your chances, move you up a queue or get a decision reversed faster. People are targeted hardest at exactly this moment, because a declined applicant is a worried one.
Never pay anyone to lodge or speed up an appeal, and never hand over your ID number, PIN, banking details or one-time password to someone offering to help.
There are two different appeal routes
This is the part that sends people to the wrong place, so it is worth getting right before you start.
If you were declined for the SRD grant, your appeal does not go to SASSA. It is lodged on the SRD service and decided by an independent tribunal that sits separately from SASSA, so the people who declined you are not the people reviewing it. SRD is also assessed month by month, which means you appeal a specific month, not your application as a whole.
If you were declined for any other grant, such as older persons, disability, child support, foster child or care dependency, the first step is to ask SASSA to reconsider the decision. If that does not resolve it, there is a further appeal beyond SASSA to the Minister of Social Development.
Both routes have a limited period after the decision in which you can act, and both are free. The current period for each is stated on the official service, and we do not publish a number here because it changes and a wrong deadline would cost you the appeal.
What an appeal outcome means
Full status guideOutcomes are shown per appeal, and for SRD per month. These are the results people commonly report.
The appeal succeeded and the decline for that period has been overturned. For SRD this applies to the month you appealed, not to every month.
The appeal was considered and the original decision stands. It does not mean nobody looked at it.
The appeal has been received and has not been decided yet.
The system has no record of an appeal for that period, which usually means the submission did not complete.
The period allowed for appealing that decision has passed.
An upheld appeal restores the decision for the period you appealed. It does not automatically approve any other month or any other grant.
How to lodge an SRD appeal
- Check the official service for the exact month that was declined and the reason given for it.
- Confirm the appeal period for that decision is still open, on the official service.
- Go to the official SRD appeals service.
- Enter your ID number and the mobile number you applied with.
- Select the month you are appealing and give the reason the decision is wrong.
- Submit it, and check back on the same service for the outcome.
Before you appeal
An appeal works best when it answers the specific reason given. "I need the money" is true and understandable, but it does not address a finding the system made about your records.
- The exact reason given for the decline, taken from the official service and not from a message someone sent you
- Which month or period you are appealing
- Whether the appeal period for that decision is still open
- Any proof that the reason given is factually wrong
- The ID number and mobile number used on the application
Before and after an appeal
SASSA GrantsWork out what the decline actually said before you appeal it.
What if my appeal has not been decided?
An appeal sitting on pending is normal. Usual reasons include:
Check on the official service that the appeal was actually received. A submission that failed quietly is a common and fixable reason for silence, and it is worth ruling out before you wait any longer.
- The appeal is queued and has not been reviewed yet
- Records are being re-checked against other government sources
- The appeal covers several months, which are considered separately
- Administrative or system delays
- The submission did not complete, so no appeal was actually recorded
If the appeal is dismissed
A dismissed appeal means the decision was reviewed and stands. That is the end of the road for that period, but not necessarily for you.
Nobody can overturn a dismissed appeal for a fee. Anyone offering to is taking money from someone who has just been told no.
- Read the reason given for the dismissal, which is often more specific than the original decline.
- Check whether the reason was about a record that you can correct, such as details held at Home Affairs.
- Correct that record at the source if it is wrong, because the grant service reads it rather than holding it.
- Consider whether a current or future period is still open to you, which is a separate question from this appeal.
- Contact SASSA through an official channel if you believe the process itself went wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Can Grant Assist SA lodge or check my appeal?
No. We are an independent information website. We cannot lodge an appeal, see its outcome, or influence it in any way. Everything happens on the official service.
Does an appeal cost money?
No. Appealing is free. Anyone charging you for it is running a scam.
How long do I have to appeal?
There is a limited period after the decision, and it differs between SRD and other grants. The current period is stated on the official service, and we do not publish a number here because it changes.
Who decides an SRD appeal?
An independent tribunal that sits separately from SASSA, so the appeal is not reviewed by the people who made the original decision.
I was declined for a disability grant. Do I use the SRD appeal service?
No. That is the wrong route. For grants other than SRD you ask SASSA to reconsider first, and there is a further appeal beyond SASSA if that does not resolve it.
Do I appeal my whole SRD application or one month?
One month at a time. SRD is assessed monthly, so each declined month is appealed separately.
My appeal says no appeal lodged. What happened?
Usually the submission did not complete. Check on the official service whether it was recorded, and lodge it again if the period is still open.
Will appealing affect my current application?
An appeal challenges a decision already made for a past period. It is a separate question from any period still being assessed.
Where appeals actually happen
Use the official services, not this website and not any third party, for:
- Lodging an appeal and checking its outcome
- The current appeal period for your decision
- The reason attached to a decline
- Asking SASSA to reconsider a non-SRD decision
- Correcting records held about you
These are the official government destinations. Check the address in your browser before entering anything.
How we handle appeal information
No deadlines stated as fact
Appeal periods change, and a wrong deadline here would cost someone their appeal. We describe that a limit exists and send you to the official service for the current one.
Routes kept separate
SRD and other grants are different processes decided by different people, so we never give one set of instructions as though it covered both.
No outcome promised
We cannot tell you whether an appeal will succeed, and we treat anyone who claims they can as a warning sign.
