SASSA Status Check: How to Check SRD Results and What to Do Next

To check your SASSA SRD application status, open the official SASSA status portal and enter your South African ID number and the cellphone number used for your application. Read the result for the month you need, then check whether it includes a decline reason, payment information or an instruction to update your details.

Waiting for grant money can make it difficult to plan for groceries, transport and household bills. A short message such as “pending” does not tell the whole story. This guide explains how to find the official result, separate an approval from a payment, and choose the next step without paying someone for help.

About this guide: Grant Assist SA is an independent information website. We cannot access application records, approve grants or release payments. Do not submit ID numbers, banking details or verification codes to us.

Check your SRD status on the official SASSA portal

Before checking: is this an SRD application?

The online SRD status service is for the special Social Relief of Distress application. Do not assume it also tracks an older person’s, disability, child support or other social grant application. For those grants, use the relevant service or contact SASSA for help with the specific application.

Someone receiving a different grant may see no useful result in an SRD lookup because they are checking the wrong service. Start with the grant type, rather than repeatedly entering personal details into different websites.

How to check SASSA SRD status online

1. Open the official status service

Use the official link above or start at the SASSA SRD website and select the application-status option. Check the address bar before entering anything. The government SRD domain is srd.sassa.gov.za.

2. Enter the application details carefully

The South African ID-holder status form asks for the applicant’s 13-digit ID number and the 10-digit phone number used to submit the application. Check for typing errors. A current phone number may not work if the application still has an older number recorded.

If the official portal provides a separate route for your identity-document category, follow that route. Do not enter made-up numbers to get past the form.

3. Read the result for the correct month

Check which month the result relates to. A previous month’s approval does not establish the outcome of another month. Write down the month, the displayed status and any reason or payment date so that a later enquiry is precise.

4. Follow the instruction attached to the result

A pending assessment, a declined month and missing banking information need different responses. Use the result to decide what to do. Repeatedly submitting a new application is not a general solution to every problem.

SASSA status meanings: a practical next-step table

The wording can vary. Treat the explanation below as general guidance; the instruction displayed on the official service takes priority.

Result or messageWhat it generally indicatesWhat to check next
PendingThe relevant assessment has not been finalised.Check for an outstanding instruction, then revisit the official service.
ApprovedThe assessment for that month has passed.Look for payment information and confirm whether money has actually reached the account.
DeclinedThe application did not meet an assessment requirement for that month.Read the reason and consider the official appeal route if the decision is incorrect.
Banking details pendingPayment details may need submission or verification.Check the banking section of the official SRD service.
Identity verification required or failedIdentity information needs attention.Compare the recorded details with the identity document and follow the official verification instructions.
Referred or additional reviewFurther checks may be required.Follow the displayed instructions and ask SASSA about the specific message if unclear.

Why is my SASSA status still pending?

A pending result means there is no final outcome for the assessment shown. It is not the same as a decline, and it does not confirm that payment is on its way.

Start with a short check:

  • Correct month: Confirm that the pending result is for the month being queried.
  • Outstanding action: Look for a request to verify identity or update information.
  • Recorded details: Check whether the application still uses the correct contact information.
  • Change over time: Keep a private record of when the result was checked and what it said.

There is no reliable waiting period that an independent website can promise for every applicant. If the same result persists and the portal gives no useful instruction, contact SASSA with the month and exact message.

Our SASSA status pending guide explains this situation in more detail.

SASSA approved but no payment: what should I check?

Approval and receipt of money are separate things. First check whether the official result includes a payment date. If no date is shown, do not treat another person’s payday or a social-media calendar as confirmation of your own payment.

If a date is displayed but the money has not arrived, check the actual bank-account transactions. Then review the payment method and any banking-verification message on the official service.

  • Is the recorded bank account correct and still active?
  • Does the account belong to the applicant?
  • Were banking details recently changed?
  • Does the displayed date relate to the month being queried?
  • Is there an official message explaining a payment problem?

Keep these details ready for an enquiry. Do not change an otherwise correct account simply because payment is late, or pay someone who claims they can “unlock” an approved grant.

For the difference between grant schedules and individual SRD payment information, see our SASSA payment dates guide.

SASSA declined status: read the reason before appealing

A declined result needs a closer look at the reason for that particular month. The useful question is whether the information behind the decision accurately reflects the applicant’s circumstances for that period.

For example, a result referring to another source of support should prompt a review of the specific record or information involved. Do not assume that the grant’s payment amount is also the income threshold. Those are different figures, and eligibility rules should be checked against current official guidance.

If the recorded reason appears incorrect, use the official appeal process. Changing bank details alone does not challenge a declined assessment.

How to submit an SRD appeal

  1. Record the declined month and exact reason from the official status result.
  2. Read the instructions on the official SRD appeals information page.
  3. Open the appeal service linked there and enter the requested application details.
  4. Complete any verification step on that official service.
  5. Select the month being challenged and follow the submission prompts.
  6. Keep the submission confirmation and return to the official appeal service to check the outcome.

The official appeals guidance describes a filing period of 30 days, with an outer limit of 90 days. Act promptly and confirm how the deadline applies to the decision shown. Do not wait until the last day. Each declined month needs its own appeal.

SRD appeals are considered by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. An appeal does not guarantee approval. For a fuller explanation, read our SASSA appeal guide.

Wrong phone number or lost SIM: use the correct update route

If the status form does not recognise the phone number, compare it with the number used when applying. A replacement SIM with a different number does not automatically update the application.

Use the number-change option provided by the official SRD service, or contact SASSA if verification cannot be completed. Avoid opening another application with different contact details as a shortcut.

Our guide to changing your SRD phone number covers the information to prepare before starting.

When banking details need attention

Go through the banking-details option on the official SRD website. Follow its identity and contact-verification instructions, and check that the account information is entered correctly.

Use an account in the applicant’s own name. Keep the submission confirmation, then check the official service for the verification result. A submitted update is not proof that the new details have already been accepted.

See our SASSA banking details guide for related preparation and safety advice. Grant Assist SA cannot make the change on an applicant’s behalf.

What if the official SASSA website will not open?

A failed page load does not reveal anything about the application’s outcome. It may be a connection or service-access problem.

  • Check that the address is spelled correctly.
  • Try opening the official SRD homepage rather than an old saved link.
  • Check the internet connection or try another browser.
  • Return later if the official service remains unavailable.
  • Contact SASSA if an urgent application issue cannot be resolved online.

Do not enter personal details into an unfamiliar replacement site because the government portal is temporarily inaccessible. Be cautious with lists of “free USSD codes” or WhatsApp numbers: confirm a channel on a current official government page before using it.

How to contact SASSA about an application problem

SASSA lists 0800 60 10 11 as its toll-free contact number and GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za for grant enquiries. Confirm the details on the official SASSA website before sending sensitive information.

Explain the issue clearly: the grant type, the month involved, the exact status message and the step that is failing. Ask which official action is required and retain any reference number supplied.

For example: “My SRD result for [month] is approved, but no payment date is displayed. The portal shows [exact message]. Is there an outstanding verification step?” This gives the adviser a more useful starting point than “Where is my money?”

Our SASSA contact details guide helps readers find the appropriate support route. Do not post an ID number or bank statement in public comments.

Protect your grant information from scams

Be suspicious of anyone promising approval, a successful appeal or earlier payment in exchange for money. An independent website cannot change a government application decision.

  • Check the domain: A familiar logo does not prove that a website is official.
  • Keep codes private: Enter verification codes only into the official process being used; never send them to another person.
  • Protect banking access: Do not share a bank PIN, password or card security code.
  • Avoid public screenshots: A status image may expose an ID number, phone number or application reference.
  • Verify unexpected messages: Open the official website independently before acting on a request.

Frequently asked questions about SASSA status checks

Can Grant Assist SA check my private application record?

No. The site explains the process and links to official services. The actual lookup takes place on SASSA’s website.

Does an SRD status check show my bank balance?

No. An application result is different from a bank balance. Check the bank’s own secure app, statement or authorised service to confirm whether money was received.

Can I use someone else’s phone number?

The South African ID-holder status form asks for the number used to submit the application. A different number may not match the record. Use the official update process if access to the registered number has been lost.

Do I need to apply again because my status is pending?

A pending result alone is not an instruction to reapply. Read the official message and follow any specific request shown there.

Can a declined month be fixed by changing my bank account?

Banking changes address payment information. An appeal challenges an assessment decision. Read the decline reason to determine which process is relevant.

Does one successful appeal approve every month?

No. SRD appeals relate to the months appealed. Check each affected month and its individual outcome.

Where should I check current grant amounts and eligibility?

Use official SASSA and South African Government announcements. Old articles and search snippets may contain figures that have changed.

Choose the next step that matches the result

Check the official record first, note the relevant month and respond to the message displayed. A pending assessment needs monitoring, a disputed decline may need an appeal, and incorrect contact or banking details need the appropriate update process.

Explore Grant Assist SA for related guidance, then use the official government service for any action involving an application or personal information.
